Adios, April!

This past month has been packed with lots of learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom.

As mathematicians, we've applied our knowledge of addition and subtraction within the context of complex word problems. We've been like math detectives, determining what information we need, what we can get rid of, and how we need to solve each problem.

Over the past week, we've learned that multiplication is repeated addition. We have used different strategies like skip counting on a hundreds chart to visualize those patterns of numbers building upon one another. We even skip counted our shoes and fingers!

Science has led us on many different adventures. In addition to our field trips to the Bob Bullock Museum and the Austin Nature and Science Center, we've been busy observing live organisms right in the classroom! Unfortunately, our batch of Painted Lady larvae turned out to have a low survival rate, but we will be getting a new shipment in the next few weeks. In the meantime, we've compared and contrasted our needs and bodies to our caterpillars and have enjoyed learning about the life cycle and mysterious metamorphosis of these insects.

Hard to believe we're only four weeks away from summer...just like our soon-to-be-butterflies, we'll be ready to fly free!

Making Memories

Last week was filled with lots of memory-making moments. We did a great job fulfilling our duty as citizens by leading the Pledge of Allegiance during assembly. We practiced programming skills in the library with some Bug-Bots.

We've been busy as chronologists measuring time and solidifying our understanding of analog clocks. In science, we've been hydrologists studying the water cycle. We celebrated the end of our week with a disco ball and a dance party.

More fun and learning to come!

Farewell, February!

These final days of February seemed to fly by!

This week, we focused on mindfulness and talked about ways to be fully present. During a lesson with Ms. Fraser, we enjoyed the opportunity to walk the labyrinth. We focused on placing one foot in front of the other and just being in the moment.

We wrapped up our subtraction regrouping unit and have been working hard to apply strategies that we've learned over the past few weeks. We will continue to practice regrouping with both addition and subtraction as we add new concepts to our mathematician toolboxes.

March will be a busy month--between leading the Pledge, Hero Projects, a field trip, and spring break, we will be movin' and groovin'!

Enjoy the weekend,
Mrs. Blake

A Wintry Mix

This week may have ended with freezing temperatures, but our mathematicians were on fire with their new subtraction regrouping strategies and skills! We even learned some new chants and cheers to help us remember our steps (ask your mathematician what we do if there's more on top, more on the floor, or numbers are the same). This concept is one of the toughest ones we tackle in second grade, but we've got very persistent learners! We keep using our positive self-talk, reminding ourselves to go step-by-step, and understanding that mistakes are learning opportunities.

We demonstrated Earth's rotation and revolution with lights, swivel stools, and students--a fun way to bring these big ideas to our small room!

While we spent most of today indoors due to the wintry weather, we did get a chance to check out the sleet for a minute.

Hello, February!

We spent the last week of this month being persistent mathematicians and problem-solvers. We applied our knowledge of regrouping to three-digit numbers and used several strategies to ensure accuracy. We even channeled our inner superheroes and did some Hulk Smashing to uncover our addends!

Next week, we dive into subtraction with regrouping.

Our weather provided opportunities to observe the different types of clouds we've been studying and we've even collected some precipitation in our rain gauge! Things will keep looking up for our next unit, Objects in the Sky.

Happy Friday!

Jammin' in January

We've had a busy week and have squeezed a lot into the past four days!

We wrapped up our two-digit addition regrouping unit and created a lovely display of regrouping rainbows to show off our skills. We will be adding another digit and diving into three-digit regrouping next week and have been practicing telling time with a few analog mini-lessons.

We've continued learning about the components of weather and after reading about types of clouds, we made some of our own.

Have a wonderful weekend!
